Salience:

The main focus is on the soldier in front, next thing you look at is the broken wall and eventually the bombed village in the background.

Reading path:

Starting with the soldier and his gun, moving on to the broken wall and ending with the bombed village in the background.

Centre and margin:

The centre of the picture combines everything, the wall, the weapon and the bombed village. Located in the margin there is the soldier as a whole.

Analysis of salience, center/margin and the reading path:

Salience:
The most “visual weight” in this picture is allocated to the soldier and the broken wall in front of the picture; it’s the most striking element you recognize at first glance. The secondary focus is laid on the bombed out village in the background of the picture.

Reading Path:
Well, I would say that if the reading path is taken through the salient images of the picture, starting with the most salient one, it would start with the soldier and the broken wall, moving on to the bombed out village and perhaps ending with the cloudy sky.

Center and Margin:
From my point of view the centre of this picture is the weapon of the soldier as the weapon in this case is the nucleus of the information. Furthermore, according to Kress and van Leuwen (vectors and compositional axes) the left side is the “given” one, and so the right side is “new” one- “..crucial to the point of the message..”.
That’s why I would say that the soldier and especially the weapon are the centre of this picture, while the bombed out village and the sky is in the margin of the picture.

Sorry for the delay!
See you tomorrow...

Salience:
The object that is most important in the picture is the soldier on the right hiding behind a wall. You realize his presence immediately. The grey sky which fills almost half of the picture is also very important for the mood the picture transports.

Reading Path and Vectors:
From the soldier's position, you can follow his look down to the truck and the houses and trees. His gun is pointing downwards out of the picture.

The Compositional Axis:
The picture is divided by a bald tree and the edge of the wall the soldier is behind.
On the left side, we see the houses and a military vehicle and on the right side a sole soldier observing them.

Picture analysis:

Salience:
The main focus of the picture is the outlook the soldier has from his position. His position is safe – and he (and also the viewer) looks to the village, that has been bombed out. Another significant part of the picture is the contrast of the brown wall and the camouflage suit of the soldier and the blue sky behind the wall.

Reading path:
As explained above, the viewer follows the view of the soldier from his covered position to the destroyed city and the blue sky in the background. This is also represented by the tree, that divides the picture in two parts – a safe part and a dangerous part.

Vectors:
One vector is the tree which divides the picture vertically and the wall, that divides the picture horizontally. It is also important to see that the soldier is inside a frame – this is indicated by the colours as well as by the vectors…

The compositional axes:
The left side of the picture (the given) is a normal city – there is nothing that is unusual there. The right side (the new) is represented by the soldier and the broken wall – elements that are disturbing the peace that is suggested when viewing the “given”. This picture also refers to the situation in this country (perhaps it is the Irak), where the soldier is something knew – and he is disturbing the “peace” or the “given” order in the city.
